In most cases, residence permits are issued for a certain period. The first residence permit with the purpose of staying with a partner is valid for a period of maximum 1 year. Before the residence permit expires, the application for an extension has to be submitted. In certain cases, it is possible to apply for a “permanent residence permit”.

Changing your Dutch residence permit

Sometimes a change in the type of residence permit is needed. For instance: you need a residence permit based on the purpose to stay with your partner instead of a residence permit for work.
